Jung
—
Dreams are an attempt by our unconscious minds
to bring our lives into emotional and psychological balance; known as individuation.
—
The unconscious expresses itself in our dreams with symbols that offer us insight into waking life.
Whether they represent hidden desires or archetypal wisdom or offer us guidance & comfort —
their purpose is always to help us lead a more meaningful life.
—
(From A Field Guide to Your Dreams by Theresa Cheung)
Jung made famous the idea of universal psychological images in dreams and myths that can be used to interpret dreams.
—
He suggested five main archetypes:
The Self, Shadow, Anima, Animus, and Persona.
—
The Self
regulates the psyche & facilitates the Individuation process
(the process toward actualization)
—
The Shadow
The part of us that we rather not acknowledge;
it is our darker nature.
It is often a dark creature, frequently of the same gender as the dreamer.
—
The Anima
is the feminine image and attributes within the male.
It has been said that the soul of a man is feminine.
—
The Animus
is the masculine image and attributes within the female.
It has been said that the soul of the woman is masculine.
—
The Persona
is our mask; what we present to the world as being our self.
